Kawerau wins War Canoe Darts competition

Kawerau not only took out the War Canoe darts competition held in Rotorua yesterday, they also won the honour of hosting the tournament’s 50th year next year.
This tournament began in Kawerau 49 years ago and has grown and developed professional dart players around the country.
Organiser Trevor Thornorought says, “We have actually bred from the time of this, tournament two NZ champions which are Herbie Nathan and Wilson Downs who sadly passed away who is from Kawerau both of them were the NZ single champions for two years in a row.”
The War Canoe dart competition involves players from Rotorua and Kawerau.
Competitor Wiremu Amoroa (Ngāi Tūhoe) says, “We have eight groups here, all trying to win the trophy, and we are trying to take it back with us to Kawerau.”
There are eight teams competing from Rotorua and Kawerau. Rotorua club captain Trevor Thornborough says they are the current holders of the War Canoe competition trophy and hope to retain their title this year.
“We are the title holders at the moment, the title holders hold the tournament for the following year so it’s so important who wins this year is who is going to be organising it and running it next year and it’s going to be a big event,” says Thornorought.
Despite Rotorua’s efforts, they were outplayed by Kawerau who will host next year’s tournament.
