Chiefs to headline holiday programme

20 January 2016

THE Gallagher Chiefs will be the main attraction at a school holiday programme in Kawerau later this month.

The rugby squad will hit town on Monday, January 25, as part of an extensive week-long tour to connect with fans and give back to communities ahead of its 2016 Super Rugby campaign.

Kawerau is one of about 16 towns and cities included on the tour.

The Chiefs will arrive from 3-4pm, with other holiday activities kicking off at noon at Firmin Field.

The players will meet local fans and take part in a Head 2 Head Raft race on the Tarawera River.

“We’re really looking forward to hosting the Chiefs,” Kawerau District Council events team leader Lee Barton said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to get behind the team ahead of the upcoming Super Rugby tournament.

“We encourage people to come down from midday and take part in the free activities, and to give the players a warm local welcome when they arrive.”

Other activities would include free raft trips through the rapids along the Tarawera River, a penalty rugby kick competition, bubble soccer and possibly bubble rugga, live music and fire service water activities, he said.

The programme is a joint venture involving Kawerau Youth Council, Take the Lead, Tuwharetoa Hauora, Blue Light Kawerau, Rafting Adventure New Zealand and the New Zealand Fire Service.

The Chiefs will visit Whakatane and Opotiki the following day, January 26.
