Kawerau boxers hit Tauranga

TWO Kawerau boxers took part in a TGA Box Professional Corporate Boxing event on Saturday.

Coach Warwick Godfery said the pair from Kawerau Boxing Club competed on the undercard for the night’s main event at the QE II Event Centre in front of 600 people.

Lorraine Te Kakara fought first against Jasmine Black, from Tauranga, in the female light-middle-weight division.

Godfery said Te Kakara followed her fight plan well, using her long reach, good jab and straight punches to her advantage, however her opponent’s strength, maturity and experience took its toll.

She fought to the end, never gave up, and split the judge’s decision, despite losing on points, Godfery said.

Zhantellie Te Riini was the second Kawerau boxer and took on Tauranga fighter Amy Yorke in the light-welter-weight division.

Te Riini needed to rely on her fitness and conditioning for much of the fight as the pair traded punches toe to toe, which made for an action-packed bout, Godfery said.

He said Yorke’s style was to move forward and keep punching.

“Te Riini began to side step and counter punch well, managing to score the cleaner blows and a unanimous decision victory.”

He said the fight was a gallant effort and both fought to a standstill.

Godfery said as the women’s coach he was proud of them, win or lose.

“Giving your best and doing your best is what makes you sleep at night and both these girls should sleep well,” he said.
