Policy analyst and strategic manager Sandra Haines said the main aim of the project was to improve Kawerau’s housing stock, with providing training opportunities for young people a secondary goal.
The council decided at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday that the project would start with one house initially and a budget of $200,000.
The next step was for the project group to decide specific recommendations regarding project management, training content and criteria for house selection and put that to a council subcommittee.
