KAWERAU District Council has acted on the community’s call for more public toilets to be installed in the town centre.
The council decided at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday to spend $140,000 on new town centre toilets and have them installed by Christmas.
Discussion about public toilets in the town centre was included in the 2016-17 annual plan consultation document which asked: “Do you agree that we need public toilets closer to Tarawera Court?”.
Of those who submitted on the topic, 21 were in favour and three were opposed.
The council agreed to install two toilets of exeloo or similar indestructible brand variety and to site them at the children’s playground outside Tarawera Court, facing the car park.
Policy analyst and strategic planner Sandra Haines said the next step was for the council to adopt the annual plan on June 28.
A project group comprising deputy mayor Alistair Holmes, resident Margaret Bradnock, who originally brought the idea to the council in a public forum, Tarawera Court owner Sheryl Cotter, and representatives of Cafe Conversations in Kawerau will meet again in the near future to plan a final design.
