Healthy Homes an award finalist

17 July 2015

KAWERAU’S Neighbourhood of Healthy Homes project is a finalist for the 2015 Local Government New Zealand community impact award.

The scheme was recognised for its role in reducing energy use and costs for Kawerau residents, improving connectedness within neighbourhoods, and providing housing maintenance to make properties safer and healthier.

“The Neighbourhood of Healthy Homes team has worked extremely hard to help the Kawerau community, and it’s fantastic to see their efforts rewarded,” project manager Mary Hermanson said.

The project began in May 2012 with a partnership between BayTrust, Eastern Bay Energy Trust and Kawerau District Council.

Healthy Homes works intensively with one neighbourhood at a time to combine community development and engagement with home insulation and maintenance.

Ninety homes were included in the first neighbourhood in 2012 and three years later the scheme has grown to five neighbourhoods and 500 homes.

The community impact award included projects or programmes that demonstrated significant improvements to the way a local government engaged with its community.

The winner will be announced at the annual LGNZ conference in Rotorua next month.
