Accolades for Kawerau GP and daughter in NZ photography awards
1 November 2016
Kawerau GP Tony Whitehead’s southern rata image, which graced the cover of New Zealand Doctor in September, was judged runner-up in the landscape category of the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year awards.
His daughter Edin’s image of Eastern Rockhopper penguins was highly commended in the wildlife category of the same awards, behind the runner-up and winner.
The pair were finalists in the competition, with winners announced at a special function in Auckland last Thursday.
Photographer for The Press in Christchurch, Iain McGregor, won the overall award of New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year. Dr Whitehead was genuinely surprised to do so well in the national competition.

“When looking at the eight finalists [in the landscape category], I had trouble placing my image in the top four due to the quality of the competition,” Dr Whitehead blogs.
“Possibly as the only black and white image I managed to stand out to the judges, but it was amazing to have my work recognised amongst the calibre of work on display.”
The father-daughter duo received certificates for their efforts. “The buzz of being recognised amongst such work is reward in itself,” Dr Whitehead says, “and sharing it with Edin, priceless.”
