Kawerau in good pre-season form

KAWERAU made a bright start to the football season by winning the Cambridge Sevens tournament on Sunday.
Kawerau, pictured, won the Bay of Plenty first division last year and somehow maintained momentum through to off season with Sunday’s win.
The tournament attracted 19 teams from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty – including entries from some of the top Northern League clubs. Whakatane also competed at the tournament, but were eliminated after the group stage.
Kawerau were in a tough group. It included the top Cambridge team, and a team made up of players from Northern League side Hamilton Wanderers, as well as federation league one side Ngongotaha.
Kawerau emerged from the group with three wins and a draw, which included a 4-0 win against Cambridge and a 4-2 upset over Wanderers. Kawerau met Melville in the semi-final and won 3-2. It set up a final clash with Waikato Unicol and Kawerau scored an extra time goal to win 3-2. Teams played 30-minute matches on three-quarter sized pitches. By winning the tournament,
Kawerau extended the tournament’s record of finding new winners each year including Whakatane.
