Kawerau opts for new shade sails

30 December 2014

KAWERAU District Council is taking legal action against the company that provided poor-performing shade sails for the town’s skate park.

The council discussed the sails at a meeting on December 16 and decided to replace them while the legal case against the provider continued.

Operations and services manager Tom McDowall said in 2012 the council received funding from New Zealand Community Trust to erect shade sails at the skate park on Plunket Street.

Mr McDowall said both the design and installation of the sails was inadequate, according to another contractor.

The contractor said the posts supporting the sails were too small, too low and unsuitable for the sail size.

Mr McDowall said there was no way to effectively repair the existing rusted poles because these were unsuitable to support the sail load.
