Dog booklets dished out in Kawerau

24 March 2015

ALL preschools and primary schools in the Kawerau district received copies of the booklet Keeping our Children Safe around Dogs last month.

Kawerau District Council heard about the resource, printed by the University of Waikato, at a regulatory and services committee meeting on Tuesday.

Regulatory and planning manager Chris Jensen said the booklets were available in both English and Maori and provided a basic understanding of dog behaviour.

They also provided practical suggestions about creating a safe and fun relationship between dogs and children, along with information about aggression, socialisation, dog language and supervision.

Mr Jensen said statistics showed most cases of dog bites or attacks on children occurred when the dog was known to the child.

During February, two dog attack incidents involving people were reported in the Kawerau area. Both animals were identified and put down, he said.
