Kawerau in top 10 communities for McCaw visit
21 August 2017
KAWERAU is in the running for Richie McCaw to visit and host the ultimate game of touch rugby.
Ten New Zealand towns are racing to become the winner of MasterCard’s Tap for your Town competition which closes on August 27.
Kawerau is in ninth equal place, and to keep rising in the rankings, people need to tap their Mastercard contactless card to pay for any purchase.
The competition will give the town with the most number of contactless payment transactions, or taps, per capita the chance to take on Richie McCaw and his hand-picked team in a game of touch.
Mastercard New Zealand and the Pacific Islands country manager Peter Chisnall said the competition was a level playing field so small and big towns had fair chances.
“While we’re not giving anything away, the numbers are close so there’s still plenty of time for Kiwis to get tapping to win the opportunity for Richie McCaw to visit their town and play touch against a local team.”
According to a recent Mastercard survey of more than 1000, New Zealanders were switching on to the benefits of contactless technology with almost three quarters, 72 percent, using their cards to tap and go.
“This competition is all about encouraging Kiwis to get tapping to reap the many benefits contactless payments offer. We’re all about bringing priceless experiences to our customers and facing off against Richie on the field is an opportunity that many Kiwis could only dream off – until now,” he said.
Based on current rankings, the top 10 New Zealand towns are:
1 Ohakune, 2 Queenstown, 3 Twizel, 4 Ashburton, 5 Hokitika, 6 Amberley, 7 Kaikoura, 8 Otorohanga, 9= Kawerau and Levin, 10= Taupo and Marton.
